Committment to family, country, truth and justice

Tonight I went to the theater to see "Fair Game".This movie examines the real-life outrage of the White House's 2003 outing of CIA agent Valerie Plame Wilson(Naomi Watts) in retaliation against her husband, former U.S, ambassador, Joe Wilson(Sean Penn),due to his challenging President Bush's reasons for the invasion of Iraq.Confronted by blatant untruths in the media,Wilson comes forward to accuse the Bush administration of lying to the people and manipulating intelligence about weapons of mass destruction to justify the war in Iraq.Ongoing attempts to discredit Wilson lead to an information leakage outing his wife, revealing her CIA agent status;and subsequently cutting her loose and hanging her out to dry. This is not just a movie about politics and espionage;about the use and abuse of power by government;or about the conflict between paranoia and fear versus truth reason and logic. This is a movie about marriage and intimacy, about love and devotion, and about committment.Committment to family, committment to country, committment to the democratic process, committment to oneself ,and most of all committment to truth and justice.Naomi Watts gives a very strong performance and Sean Penn is masterful as always.Penn is one of the best actors in Hollywood. (As much as I love his acting I'm even more impressed by his work as a director). He is an artisan and a craftsman who will never be a hack.He works only on projects that he believes in strongly. He delivers from the heart.Political allegiances may divide people over viewing this movie, but those who choose to will find themselves well entertained and perhaps less inclined to swallow 'hook line and sinker',and without questioning, the proclamations of officialdom.
